THE CAMBRIAN SQUID THAT WASN’T A SQUID

❃ Drifting through the ancient seas more than 500 million years ago, Nectocaris pteryx was one of the strangest creatures of the Cambrian world. Its streamlined body carried broad lateral fins, a pair of long grasping tentacles, stalked camera-like eyes, and a large flexible funnel at the front. For decades it resisted classification, appearing at different times to resemble several unrelated groups, before new fossils led scientists to interpret it as a primitive, soft-bodied relative on the cephalopod lineage.

❃ Its body reveals an extraordinary early experiment in underwater movement. The large funnel was interpreted as a structure capable of directing water, suggesting that jet propulsion may have appeared in cephalopod evolution before the familiar mineralized shell evolved. With sensitive-looking eyes, flexible tentacles, lateral fins, and a streamlined body, Nectocaris may have been an active predator moving close to the ancient seafloor. Yet its exact evolutionary position remains debated, with later research questioning whether some of its structures truly functioned as a cephalopod-style propulsion and respiratory system.

❃ Preserved in the remarkable Burgess Shale of British Columbia, Nectocaris pteryx offers a rare glimpse into a time when the major branches of animal life were still taking shape. It had no mineralized shell, yet possessed a body plan that hints at the beginnings of one of the ocean's most successful lineages. A tiny, tentacled mystery from the Cambrian seas, it reminds us that the earliest history of cephalopods was stranger, softer, and far less predictable than the fossil record once suggested.
