❃ Drifting through the ancient Paleozoic seas, Orthoceras was a straight-shelled nautiloid cephalopod whose name means “straight horn.” Its long, tapered shell was divided into a series of internal chambers, creating the distinctive segmented appearance seen in fossils today. Although the name Orthoceras is often used broadly for straight-shelled nautiloids, the genus itself refers more specifically to Orthoceras regulare.
❃ Inside that remarkable shell was a buoyancy system that allowed the animal to control its position in the water. A tube called the siphuncle passed through the chambers, helping regulate their liquid and gas contents, while the animal's muscular body occupied the living chamber at the wider end. Like other nautiloids, it was a marine predator capable of moving through the water using jet propulsion.
❃ Orthoconic nautiloids flourished hundreds of millions of years ago, particularly during the early Paleozoic, and some members of this broader group reached extraordinary sizes. Their fossils preserve the elegant geometry of their chambered shells, with septa crossing the shell and the siphuncle running lengthwise through its center. Today, these fossils offer a striking glimpse into an ancient ocean where long-shelled cephalopods were among the dominant marine hunters.

2. Give it a good fluff — gently knead the body and work the limbs, wings, ears, or tail to redistribute the filling.
3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.
4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.
5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
