❃ Astraspis (Astraspis desiderata) is an extinct genus of primitive, jawless armored fish that swam in the warm, shallow epicontinental seas covering North America during the Late Ordovician period, roughly 450 million years ago. Measuring around eight inches in length, this early marine vertebrate lived alongside towering cephalopods and sea scorpions, representing a critical milestone in early vertebrate evolution.
❃ Defending itself in a world ruled by giant predatory invertebrates, Astraspis was encased in a remarkable suit of dermal armor. Its head and forward torso were shielded by broad, interlocking bony plates studded with star-shaped tubercles called asterolepid tubercles, which gave the genus its name. Behind this solid carapace, the rest of its tapering body and tail were covered in smaller, flexible diamond-shaped scales that allowed for swimming movement.
❃ Without true jaws or paired fins, Astraspis was a benthic bottom-dweller, using an array of small gill openings and a mobile tail to steer along the muddy ocean floor. Its downward-pointing, jawless mouth was likely adapted to ingest soft-bodied prey, algae, and organic sediments swept up from ancient reef beds. Well-armored, historically significant, and uniquely textured, Astraspis is a captivating relic from the dawn of vertebrate life.

2. Give it a good fluff — gently knead the body and work the limbs, wings, ears, or tail to redistribute the filling.
3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.
4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.
5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
