Endemic to the rainforests of Madagascar, Argema mittrei is one of the largest silk moths in the world, with wings of luminous yellow edged in russet and a pair of impossibly long, ribbon-like tails trailing behind the hindwings — streamers that can stretch over fifteen centimetres and give the species its name.

❃ Adults live for only four or five days. They emerge without functional mouthparts, unable to feed, and spend their brief existence entirely focused on finding a mate before their reserves run out. By day they rest motionless in the canopy; by night the males drift through the forest on broad, silent wings, drawn by pheromones over remarkable distances.

❃ Habitat loss across Madagascar has pushed the comet moth into a precarious position in the wild, though captive breeding programmes have helped preserve the species. Its cocoons are pierced with small natural holes — an adaptation thought to drain rainwater in the humid rainforest — and remain among the most distinctive in the silk moth family. 5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
