❃ Moving through the towering forests of South and Southeast Asia, the great hornbill is one of the most striking birds of the tropical canopy. Its enormous yellow-and-black bill is topped by a curved casque, while bold black wings, a pale throat, and a long white-tipped tail create a dramatic silhouette in flight. Among the largest Asian hornbills, it spends much of its life high among old-growth trees, where its powerful wingbeats can be heard long before the bird comes into view.

❃ That massive bill is perfectly suited to a fruit-rich life in the canopy. Great hornbills feed heavily on figs and other fruits, but they can also seize insects, reptiles, birds, and small mammals from branches and crevices, tossing prey into the air before swallowing it. Their large gape also allows them to carry and disperse seeds that smaller birds cannot handle, making the great hornbill an important gardener of the forest.

❃ Their breeding behavior is just as extraordinary. The female retreats into a natural tree cavity and seals the entrance from the inside, leaving only a narrow opening through which the male delivers food. She remains protected inside while incubating her eggs and caring for the young, with the male carrying out repeated foraging trips to keep his family supplied. Dependent on mature forests filled with large nesting trees and fruiting plants, the great hornbill is more than a spectacular canopy dweller — it is a vital link in the renewal of the forests it calls home.

Don’t worry if yours looks a little flattened when first unpacked — the filling is designed to bounce back and simply needs a little time and fluffing to take its full shape.

Bringing it back to form:

1. Remove it from the packaging as soon as it arrives — don’t leave it packed.

2. Give it a good fluff — gently knead the body and work the limbs, wings, ears, or tail to redistribute the filling.

3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.

4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.

5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.

The kiwi and hornbill were magnificent. The only downside was that the packaging had come open, and the hornbill was peering at me when I opened the locker to collect the parcel! It had travelled a long way and there was no way of knowing when this happened though. It would not deter me from ordering again.

It's awesome that you have such exotic animals available. The only complaint I would have is that I was watching a video on YouTube of a Great Hornbill, and an ad popped up for the exact same item I bought from you, but from another company, and for a fraction of the price! It surprised me to see the item for $19 when I had paid GB over $50. Oh, well. Love the item regardless.
