❃ The arapaima (Arapaima gigas) is one of the largest freshwater fishes in the world, inhabiting rivers, floodplains, and lakes throughout the Amazon Basin. With an elongated body covered in enormous scales and flashes of reddish coloration toward its tail, this prehistoric-looking predator can grow several feet long and weigh hundreds of pounds. Its lineage belongs to an ancient group of fishes whose history stretches back millions of years.
❃ Life in warm, oxygen-poor Amazonian waters has given the arapaima an extraordinary adaptation: it breathes air. A specialized swim bladder functions much like a lung, forcing the fish to regularly rise to the surface and gulp atmospheric oxygen. This allows arapaimas to survive in waters where many other large fish would struggle, but their need to surface also makes their presence surprisingly easy to detect.
❃ Arapaimas are powerful predators, feeding primarily on fish while occasionally taking other small animals near the water's surface. Their enormous scales provide impressive protection, combining a hard mineralized exterior with flexible internal layers that help resist damage. 1. Remove it from the packaging as soon as it arrives — don’t leave it packed.
2. Give it a good fluff — gently knead the body and work the limbs, wings, ears, or tail to redistribute the filling.
3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.
4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.
5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
