❃ Slipping through the clear waters of rivers, lakes, wetlands, and rocky coastal shores, the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is one of the most widely distributed otters in the world. Its streamlined body, dense brown fur, pale throat, webbed feet, and powerful tapering tail are perfectly shaped for an amphibious life. Although widespread across Eurasia and parts of North Africa, this elusive mammal is often difficult to spot in the wild.

❃ Built for underwater hunting, the Eurasian otter relies heavily on fish, while also taking crustaceans, amphibians, insects, birds, and other available prey. Its sensitive whiskers help detect movements underwater, allowing it to locate prey even when visibility is poor. With a flexible body and webbed feet providing powerful propulsion, the otter can maneuver quickly through water before returning to land to rest and groom its dense, insulating coat.

❃ Mostly solitary and often active at night, Eurasian otters establish territories around waterways where food, shelter, and suitable breeding sites are available. Their populations have suffered from pollution, habitat loss, accidental trapping, and other human pressures, although some populations have recovered following improved water quality and habitat protection. Classified as Near Threatened, the Eurasian otter remains an important indicator of healthy aquatic ecosystems — a graceful predator whose presence connects the life of the river with the land around it.

2. Give it a good fluff — gently knead the body and work the limbs, wings, ears, or tail to redistribute the filling.

3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.

4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.

5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
