It hatches as an ordinary, upright larva with one eye on each side of its head — but as it grows, one eye slowly migrates across the skull to join the other, until both sit on the same side of the face. The young fish then tips onto its side and sinks to the seafloor, beginning a new life lying flat against the bottom.

Its upward-facing side can shift color and pattern to melt into sand, gravel, or mud in a matter of moments, while its underside stays pale and unseen. Buried to the eyes and nearly invisible, it waits motionless for shrimp, worms, and small fish to stray within reach, then erupts upward to seize them in an instant.

❃ Flounders live in coastal waters and estuaries across much of the world, from cold northern seas to warm tropical shallows. Different species turn "left-eyed" or "right-eyed" depending on which way their eye migrates, a quirk used to tell them apart. 4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.

5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
