❃ Prowling the oceans some 270 million years ago, Helicoprion possessed one of the most bizarre mouths in the history of life — a spiraling coil of teeth curled into the lower jaw like the blade of a circular saw. For over a century this "tooth whorl" baffled scientists, who variously placed it on the snout, the tail, or the upper lip, unable to agree how such a structure could possibly have worked.
❃ Modern CT scans of a rare intact fossil finally solved the puzzle. The spiral sat deep in the lower jaw, and as the animal fed, older teeth rotated inward and downward while new ones grew at the front — meaning it never shed a tooth in its life, but coiled every one it ever grew into an ever-growing whorl. As the jaw closed, the saw-like blade sliced backward through soft-bodied prey like squid, drawing the meal deeper into the throat.
❃ Despite the name, Helicoprion was not a true shark. It belonged to a group closer to modern ratfish and chimaeras, with a mostly cartilage skeleton that rarely fossilized — which is why the durable tooth whorl is nearly all that remains of it. Reaching perhaps seven meters in length, this spiral-toothed giant survived even the great Permian extinction, only to vanish soon after, leaving behind one of paleontology's strangest and longest-running mysteries.

3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.
4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.
5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
