❃ The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a primitive, jawless parasitic fish native to the coastal waters, estuaries, and river systems of the northern and western Atlantic Ocean. With a slender, eel-like body that can grow up to three feet long, smooth scaleless skin, and seven distinct gill pores along each side of its head, this ancient vertebrate belongs to an evolutionary lineage that predates the dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years.
❃ Lacking true jaws, the sea lamprey is famous for its distinctive suction-cup oral disc lined with concentric rings of sharp, horn-like keratin teeth. At the center lies a raspy, piston-like tongue used to latch onto host fish such as trout, salmon, and cod. To feed, the lamprey secretes an anticoagulant called lamphredin, which prevents its host’s blood from clotting while it feeds on bodily fluids in open waters.
❃ Sea lampreys are anadromous survivors, spending several years as harmless, blind, filter-feeding larvae called ammocoetes buried in riverbeds before metamorphosing into parasitic adults that migrate out to sea. When mature, they return to freshwater rivers to build stone nests, spawn, and complete their life cycle. Prehistoric, highly specialized, and biologically fascinating, the sea lamprey is one of the most enduring living relics of early marine evolution.

1. Remove it from the packaging as soon as it arrives — don’t leave it packed.
2. Give it a good fluff — gently knead the body and work the limbs, wings, ears, or tail to redistribute the filling.
3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.
4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.
5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
