❃ Lurking along the rocky seafloor of the North Pacific, the Japanese warbonnet fish is a distinctive member of the sculpin family. Its elongated body, broad head, spiny fins, and mottled brown markings help it blend naturally into the rugged underwater landscape. Known scientifically as Hemilepidotus gilberti, it is found from the waters around Hokkaido, Japan, northward toward the Bering Sea.

❃ Built for life close to the bottom, this sturdy fish has a series of prominent dorsal spines and four spines along the preoperculum near its cheeks. Its body carries bands of specialized scales, while its elongated shape allows it to maneuver among rocks and other structures on the seafloor. Japanese warbonnets are demersal fish, living from shallow waters down to depths of roughly 604 metres.

❃ From the coastal waters of northern Japan to the cold reaches of the Bering Sea, the Japanese warbonnet inhabits a broad stretch of the North Pacific. Adults can reach around 36 centimetres in standard length, making them substantial yet elusive inhabitants of the seafloor. 3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.

4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.

5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
