Its compact body carried two rows of distinctive bony plates along the neck, back, and tail, while pairs of sharp spikes extended from the rear of the body and tail. Named after Huayang, an ancient name for Sichuan, this remarkable stegosaur was one of the earliest known members of its group.

Its beaked mouth was suited to cropping vegetation, while its formidable tail spikes likely served as an important defensive weapon against predators. The combination of tall plates and paired tail spikes gave its silhouette an unmistakable profile, turning its armour into both a striking feature and a potential survival advantage.
