❃ Cutting through the warm surface waters of tropical and subtropical seas, the flying fish is built like a living arrow. Its streamlined, torpedo-shaped body tapers toward a deeply forked tail, while enormous pectoral fins stretch from its sides like delicate wings. Usually blue or blue-green above and silvery beneath, its colors help it blend into the shifting light of the open ocean. Some species take this design even further, developing enlarged pelvic fins that give them a remarkable four-winged appearance.

❃ The flying fish does not truly fly — it glides. When threatened by predators such as tuna, marlin, and other fast-moving hunters, it accelerates underwater and bursts through the surface, using its powerful lower tail lobe to gain speed before spreading its rigid pectoral fins. Once airborne, it can skim above the waves for hundreds of metres, sometimes returning its tail to the water for another burst of propulsion before continuing its glide. What looks like flight is actually one of the ocean's most extraordinary escape strategies.

❃ Found across the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, flying fish spend much of their lives near the surface of warm open waters, where they feed largely on plankton and other tiny drifting organisms. They travel in schools and form an important link in the ocean food web, serving as prey for larger fish and seabirds. Their ability to launch themselves into the air transforms the boundary between sea and sky into an escape route — allowing these remarkable fish to briefly leave the world beneath the waves behind.
